Under the Canopy: Tree Canopy & Urban Heat Island

Project Objective

Exhibit & Book Design; Capstone Project

Programs Used

Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, Photoshop & Blender

Description

Starting in Fall 2023, each ASU student selected a social issue to research for their senior capstone project. This research would become the basis of a physical clock, presentation, exhibit and exhibit book. I explored the effects of urban heat island and the critical role of urban tree canopy for my project.

My exhibit and book highlight the importance of tree canopies in reducing the effects of urban heat island and the impact on public health. You can explore my exhibit boards in the accompanying video and learn more about my related projects in the exhibit book located here.

Process

When designing the exhibit panels, I took care to connect the panels through the design and to keep the text within the viewer’s line of sight. I did this by creating an illustration that spanned the bottom of both panels. Additionally, I used bright colors to attract viewer attention and to reflect the topic (extreme heat vs the cooling effect of trees) as well as a scrolling graphic.

The final part of the capstone project was designing a book that contained all my senior project designs. To create the book, I considered the amount of text and sizes and shapes of my photos to create a layout that was consistent across spreads. Finally, I used full bleed images to tie-in with the oversized illustration and the same typeface used in the exhibit panels.
